The Football League Cup, currently the Carling Cup, has had many names over the years from the 'Milk Cup' to the 'Coca Cola Cup' but its pre sponsor name was the most accurate definition of the competition - simply the Football League Cup.
Whether you are following your team home or away in the Carling Cup you will find all the hotel, flights and travel information you need through the Football Travel Guide.
What's at stake?
Although the Football League Cup lacks some of the glamour of the F A Cup, there is still plenty of opportunities for a giant killing, a trip to Wembley, winning the first trohpy of the season and winning a place in Europe the following season.
The Cup is a straight knock out competition for all of the 92 football league clubs. The final is usually held at Wembley Stadium in February.
2010/11 Football League Cup / Carling Cup
Birmingham City upset the odds by beating Arsenal 2-1 in the 2011 League Cup Final. Sadly for them, as has happened to a number of former winners of this mid season Cup competition, their league form trailed off in the 2nd half of the of the season and they were relegated from the Premier League, although they did qualify for the UEFA Europa League.
2009-10 Football League Cup / Carling Cup
The defending Champions Manchester United retained their trophy with a 2-1 win aganst Aston Villa despite falling behind in just 5 minutes.
2008-09 Football League Cup / Carling Cup
Last season Manchester United beat the holders Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on penalties in the final at Wembley.
Top-flight clubs will not enter the competition until the second round, although teams that have qualified for Europe are introduced a stage later.
